Destination Overview

Maharashtra Holidays

Maharashtra pairs India's largest metro (Mumbai) with the country's most dramatic monsoon landscape — the Western Ghats — plus a 720 km Konkan coastline and India's wine country around Nashik.

For Mumbai and Pune travellers this is the go-to weekend map: Lonavala–Khandala, Mahabaleshwar–Panchgani, Matheran and Karjat for the hills; Alibaug, Kashid, Ganpatipule and Tarkarli for the Konkan coast; Nashik for vineyard stays.

For heritage travellers, the UNESCO caves of Ajanta and Ellora near Aurangabad remain some of Asia's most important rock-cut monuments and pair well with a Shirdi–Nashik loop.

We plan Maharashtra as short 2–3 night resort weekends and as longer 5–7 night self-drive loops combining hills, coast and vineyards.

Why Visit

Why plan Maharashtra Holidays with us

Four reasons this destination keeps drawing our travellers back.

India's best monsoon

June–September turns the Western Ghats into a green amphitheatre of waterfalls — Bhandardara, Malshej and Amboli are unmissable.

Weekend resort strength

Lonavala, Karjat, Alibaug and Mahabaleshwar have some of India's best 2-hour-from-metro luxury resorts and villas.

Wine country + food

Sula, Grover-Zampa and York vineyards near Nashik run tastings, harvest-season stays and vineyard dinners.

Coast + hills in one trip

You can drive from a Lonavala hillside to an Alibaug beach villa in under 3 hours — a genuinely rare combination.

Best Time to Visit

When to visit Maharashtra

Winter (best)

October – February

18–30 °C, dry and clear. Ideal for hills, coast, vineyards and heritage circuits. Book long weekends early.

Monsoon (dramatic)

June – September

The Ghats at their most beautiful. Best for Lonavala, Malshej, Bhandardara and Amboli — resorts run monsoon offers.

Summer

March – May

Hot in the plains (35–40 °C) but Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani stay pleasant — a good pick for hill getaways.

Travel Tips

Insider tips for Maharashtra

Practical, locally-informed advice we give every traveller before departure.

Book monsoon resort weekends (Lonavala, Karjat, Mahabaleshwar) 3–4 weeks in advance — Friday check-ins fill up first.

For Alibaug prefer the M2M or RoRo ferry from Mumbai over the road route — cuts 2 hours off a weekend.

Nashik wineries need pre-booked tastings; combine with a Saturday-night vineyard dinner.

Ajanta caves shut on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays — plan your circuit around this.

Konkan coast has patchy mobile data — download offline maps before you leave the highway.
